Post-Operative Instructions

What are the post-operative instructions?

Your pet has just undergone anesthesia and surgery. To ensure a smooth recovery, please follow these instructions carefully. It is your responsibility to read and understand these instructions.

  • Keep your pet quiet for at least 24 hours after surgery. No running, jumping, or playing. If possible, keep your pet inside for 7 to 10 days, going out for leash walks to use the bathroom only.
  • Offer your pet small amounts of food and water after you arrive home. If your pet is unable to hold down his food or water, wait until morning and try again. Resume normal feeding the morning after surgery. Your pet may prefer ice chips to lick the first night.
  • Do not allow your pet to lick or chew at his incision. He can do damage requiring further care at your expense. Elizabethan collars to prevent licking can be purchased at your local pet supply store or from MASH. Check the incision daily for swelling, redness or discharge. A small amount of swelling is usually normal (marble size swelling). MASH will inform you if suture removal is necessary.
  • Do not bathe your cat or dog for 7-10 days. Dry shampoos are available at your pet supply store if necessary.
  • Do not give your pet any medication for pain without speaking to your veterinarian first. MASH offers three days of pain medication for a small fee. Please ask us for information.
  • If any of the following conditions occur please contact your private veterinarian or MASH immediately:
    1. Loss of appetite for more than one day.
    2. Refusal to drink water for more than 24 hours.
    3. Blood coming from the incision.
    4. Vomiting the day after surgery.
    5. Diarrhea the day after surgery.
    6. Discharge from the incision.
    7. An open incision.
  • MASH cannot reimburse you for veterinary care.
  • Animals must be picked up by pre-arranged time.
